  11.         The public is invited to visit the Jet Propulsion
  12. Laboratory during an open house Saturday, Dec. 3, 1988, from
  13. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the
  14. date JPL became part of the National Aeronautics and Space
  15. Administration (NASA). 
  16.         JPL is a non-profit, operating laboratory of the
  17. California Institute of Technology, and conducts scientific
  18. exploration missions of the solar system with robotic 
  19. spacecraft for NASA.   JPL was transferred from U.S. Army to
  20. NASA jurisdiction on Dec. 3, 1958.
  21.         JPL is located at 4800 Oak Grove Dr. in Pasadena,
  22. near the Oak Grove Drive exit of the 210 (Foothill)
  23. Freeway.    The open house is free-of-charge.  Special parking
  24. and transportation is available for disabled visitors.  There
  25. are no restrictions on the use of photographic or video
  26. equipment.   
  27.         Full-size spacecraft will be on display, including
  28. the Galileo orbiter scheduled for launch to Jupiter on the,
  29. space shuttle next year.  Galileo, now in final assembly, may
  30. be viewed in JPL's clean-room.  
  31.         Exhibits will focus on the scientific highlights of
  32. JPL's 30-year exploration of Earth and the other planets.
  33.  
  34. JPL lecturers will present the findings of JPL spacecraft
  35. that have visited Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and
  36. Uranus.  Visitors may also tour the control room of the Deep
  37. Space Network, which is in daily contact with the Voyager 2
  38. spacecraft headed for a flyby of Neptune next August.   The
  39. Deep Space Network is also assisting the Soviet Union in
  40. tracking Soviet Phobos spacecraft on its way to Mars.
  41.         Demonstrations will include a working robotic rover
  42. designed to explore Mars, and a "Mars Kite" also being
  43. developed to study the red planet.  
  44.         A new 30-minute, multivideo, Dolby sound
  45. production, "Welcome to Outer Space," will be shown every 45
  46. minutes.  A variety of T-shirts, buttons, slides and other
  47. items will be for sale in the shop operated by JPL's Employee
  48. Recreation Center.  The Laboratory cafeteria will provide
  49. food and beverage service throughout the day.
